Excerpts from the Ofsted Inspection Report on Boarding 2009

"Young people are provided with a varied and substantial diet which is well balanced. Young people clearly enjoy the food they are provided with."

"Young people are protected from bullying and enjoy a harmonious and calm environment. Young people know how to report any issues or behaviour that concerns or upsets them and these are dealt with quickly and robustly by the headteacher and staff. There are positive relationships between young people, and the recent separation of boardes in relation to age group has created more appropriate peer groups within dormitories. Overall young people report feeling happy and well-supported whilst in school."

"Young people enjoy regular, structured and varied activities on a daily basis. The range of activities available to young people is very good and includes the opportunity to become a member of the 'fire crew' where they receive training from professional fire fighters."

"Young people describe the school and staff as very supportive. Support on a day-to-day basis is accessible at all times and the headteacher is available at most times during the day. Young people report that they can take any personal issues they may have to staff or the headteacher confident that they will be dealt with appropriately."

"The school has recently introduced a weekly boarders' meeting in which young people are able to raise issues or make suggestions about how boarding can be improved. Additionally young people report being able to raise issus or make suggestions on a day-to-day basis which are taken seriously by the headteacher and staff and are implemented if appropriate to do so. Young people feel listened to and taken seriously and a good balance is struck between the needs of the individual with the needs of the larger group."

"Young people enjoy a good standard of accommodation, which is clean, tidy and well maintained. The boarding houses are attractive, reasonably spacious and well furnisehd. The decor throughout both boarding houses is attractive and maintained to a good standard."

Excerpts from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) 2009 Inspection Report on The Old Rectory School

"The teaching of pupils in mixed year groups, and through very small

tutorial groups, allows them to work successfully and confidently at their

own ability level. The development of literacy and numeracy skills present

significant challenges for many pupils because of the nature of their

difficulties. However, the appropriate and strong emphasis on these skills

provides a secure foundation for their future learning."

"The improved use of ICT has led to more opportunities for pupils' co-

operative and independent learning, and prepares them better for greater

independence in their later years."

"Appropriate attention is given to the pupils' aesthetic and creative

development, through music, art, DT and drama which contribute

significantly to the pupils' all round personal development."

"Personal, social and health education (PSHE) reflects the aims and ethos

of the school well, by emphasising the need to give pupils a supportive

learning environment, and opportunities to develop their confidence and

self-esteem."

"Pupils develop their self-esteem and self-confidence through good

opportunities provided in lessons and activities for pupils to discover new

experiences. Pupils in a drama activity displayed considerable confidence

when they gave instruction to other members of their group. This reflects the

good support they receive from teachers who respect them as individuals."

"A happy friendly atmosphere is fostered throughout the school in which

pupils flourish, because they feel secure and valued."
